Andrea Van Hook gives us an assistive technology executive’s perspective on healthcare on this episode of the Perspectives on Healthcare Podcast with Rob Oliver. Andrea is the Executive Director of RESNA (Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America.) RESNA is an association for assistive technology professionals. A member of Generation X, Andrea Van Hook lives in Washington DC, where RESNA is headquartered.
Here are 3 things that stood out as Andrea Van Hook from RESNA shared an assistive technology executive’s perspective on healthcare:
· Assistive technology can be defined very broadly. It is any type of technology that helps a person with a disability function in a way similar to the rest of the population.
· Quality healthcare is centered around the person, the patients. It is not imposed on them, it is not too expensive, and it is
accessible. It enhances everyone’s lives, not just the lives of people with disabilities.
· Everyone’s life is enhanced when the community is inclusive of everyone. We can learn so much from each other by listening to people’s lived experience.
